The DO Penedès is the Denomination of Origin with the most history and tradition in Catalonia, located just forty kilometres away from Barcelona.
Thanks to its geographical location, it produces wines influenced by the sea breezes that come from the Garraf coast and reach the pre-coastal mountain range. After centuries of winemaking tradition, the DO Penedès is approaching the future as a benchmark in Catalonia.
The unique character of the Penedès has given rise to a zoning system that better explains and reflects its wines. There are three distinct areas: the Upper Penedès, the Maritime Penedès and the Central Penedès. The existence of microclimates guarantees a diversity of wines, with a thousand different flavours, aromas, bodies and structures that are the result of the different climates, the different landscapes, and the richness and variety of soils in the Penedès. From the blue of the sea that surrounds the vineyards of the Maritime Penedès to the green of the mountains or the plains of the Upper Penedès and Central Penedès, all colours are distilled into balanced and harmonious whites (with Xarel·lo as the flagship variety), and elegant and intense reds.
The unique nature of the DO Penedès wines comes precisely from this diversity. Whether they're white, red or rosé wines, their multitude of flavours, aromas, bodies and structures come from the richness and variety of soils in a diverse region tinged with the green of the mountains or the blue of the sea.

Between the sea and the mountain. Halfway between Barcelona and Tarragona, the DO Penedès stretches from the sea to the mountains. The Penedès is made up of ten subzones, grouped into three larger territories: the subzones of Costers del Garraf, Montañas de Ordal and Marina del Garraf, located in the coastal mountain range; Costers del Anoia, Costers de Lavernó, Valle de Bolos-Anoia, Colinas de Vilafranca, Cuenca del Foix and Costers del Montmell, located in the coastal depression; and Altos de Ancosa, the highest vineyards, located in the Sierra de Ancosa. Thanks to the diversity of territories, the DO Penedès has a huge variety of microclimates.
In the subzones of the coastal depression, the climate is typically Mediterranean, i.e. mild and warm, while in the Penedès Marítimo area it's more temperate due to the influence and proximity of the sea. In the vineyards located in the Sierra de Ancosa at a height of 600 metres above sea level, the climate is continental, with a high temperature contrast that is good for slow ripening.
