The Romans were the driving force behind wines in the regions of Tarragona, which were considered the most privileged in the whole Empire.
The Calle Real in Tarragona, just by the port, grouped together many wineries that exported their wines by sea across Europe. The phylloxera outbreak in the late nineteenth century caused major destruction and led to a widespread replanting of vineyards.
These changes came hand in hand with the formation of the cooperative movement, which fostered the construction of modernist wineries in various locations by leading architects such as César Martinell, a disciple of Gaudi. The DO Tarragona as such was created in 1945 and its first regulation was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1947. It was initially established to protect fortified wines, the so-called Tarragona Classics. Today, the production area of the DO Tarragona has two clearly distinct areas. One is the Camp de Tarragona area (Alt Camp, Baix Camp and Tarragonès), while the other is the Ribera de Ebro area.
The white wines produced are very smooth, balanced, aromatic and fruity. In the Ribera de Ebro area, they're a deeper colour. The rosé wines are fresh and cherry-coloured. Meanwhile. the red wines produced in the Camp de Tarragona are firm and aromatic. The reds from the Ribera de Ebro harmonise the body and colour of the Cariñena and the richness of the Garnacha.

In the DO Tarragona, the climate is Mediterranean with continental influences in the highest area of the Valle del Ebro. The vineyards are affected by the sea breeze and the mistral around the Tarragona area and by the mistral in the Ribera de Ebro area. Mild winters and very hot summers are normal, although they're cooled down by the sea breeze.
The average annual rainfall is 475 mm and 650 mm for the Ribera de Ebro. In the Ribera de Ebro, winters are cold and summers are hot and very bright. The development of the vine in this type of climate is optimal and it produces high quality grapes that are also perfect for making fortified wines.
The white grape predominates over the black grape. White varieties account for 83% of the total area, while 17% corresponds to red varieties.
The grape varieties used to make DO Tarragona wines are: Macabeo, Xarel·lo, Parellada, Frontignan Moscatel, Moscatel Alexandria, Garnacha Blanca, Malvasia de Sitges, Subirat Pariente or Malvasía, Xarel·lo Red, Sumoll White, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Labrador (for white wines).
Tempranillo, Sumoll, Cariñena, Garnacha Tinta, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon (for red wines).
