The DO Catalunya, created in 1999, covers the vast majority of wine-producing municipalities in Catalonia. It sets out to improve the quality of wines and vineyards by fostering research and applying cutting-edge technologies in order to respond to today's demanding markets. Consolidate, create and innovate are the cornerstones of this DO. That's why it has a wide range of authorised grape varieties, so that winegrowers and wineries can make their wines with flexibility, creativity and freedom. What's more, thanks to the DO Catalunya, winemaking municipalities that couldn't be assigned to another DO but which produce great wines, such as huge swathes of the Anoia or Barcelona regions, can be covered and can bear the trusted hallmark that DO Catalunya certification gives to consumers.
22 million bottles of DO Catalunya were sold in the year 2000, a figure that has now reached 60.3 million bottles. Each bottle of this DO reflects the whole of Catalonia. And this isn't rhetoric, but instead the philosophy of a DO that sets out to provide winegrowers with a more flexible framework and with more possibilities for assemblage when creating their wines.
All DO Catalunya wines pursue the maximum expression of the grape by fermenting the musts in stainless steel vats under strict temperature control. Or by guaranteeing the characteristic bouquet of contact with oak wood, which at the same time enriches them with complexity. There are white, rosé, red, Crianza, Reserve and Great Reserve wines, with a minimum time in the barrel of 6, 12 or 24 months in the case of red wines, and a total ageing period of 2, 3 or 5 years respectively. You can also find sparkling wines and fortified wines within the DO.
And there are unusual coupages thanks to the multiple options offered by its array of authorised grape varieties. Traditionally grown varieties in Catalonia are often combined with recently introduced varieties from outside the region.
